5.1. Better Conflict Resolution
Randy 2020-01-10T00:05:57+00:00We don’t just have problems. We have problems with our ability to collectively solve our problems.
We don’t just have problems. We have problems with our ability to collectively solve our problems.
Figure out ways to bring good into the world that are responsive to today’s reality—not yesterday’s reality.
Too often, it’s a way of making people feel like they’re being productive…when, in fact, it doesn’t lead to more productive action at all.
It’s a shame that there are so many problems, and so many people genuinely concerned about fixing them…yet we rarely end up engaging with each other.
How strongly you believe what you believe and the strategy you use to engage with others who don’t believe as you do are two very different things.
Politicians have figured out that nothing gets us more riled up than appealing to our “values.”
We don’t need more false equivalence. But we also need to be careful not to automatically label any argument that ends in similarity: “false equivalence.”
Eventually, you’re only left with yourself and small band of people who see things exactly as you do…and you see everybody else as an enemy or an enabler.
Don’t misinterpret “think globally, act locally” as an excuse not to concern yourself with doing anything bigger.
Every time we reduce the number of people who are on our side…we reduce our chances of actually getting something done.
Our faith in ourselves can actually backfire, when it comes to coming together and making the world a better place.
When there’s a policy up for debate, and it kind of does what you want but not entirely…what do you do?
If we take a step back, and do our homework before we take action…we’re going to be much more likely to succeed.
If we want a popular movement to succeed in this day and age, we need to break the stranglehold of this two-party system.
Nobody benefits more from this fifty-fifty split among the American people than our political and economic elites.
Many of our efforts to create social change—even though they’re well-intentioned—are wasted.
